Bio-fouling

Anyone who has spent time in or around a marine environment will have witnessed the effects of bio-fouling – the unwanted plant or animal growth that occurs on virtually any object that is left in the water.  This growth is a multimillion-dollar problem to the shipping industry, where it is controlled by use of anti-fouling paints.  However, not all materials are suitable for painting.

Kinetic Elements is pleased to promote Suricle™ as a viable solution to many bio-fouling scenarios. Kinetic Elements has a licence to commercialise this CSIRO developed technology.
Micron sized particles are embedded into an adhesive polymer film at supersonic speed using a sophisticated cold spray process.  The discrete particles form a non-conductive surface which is long lasting and provides effective anti-fouling protection.  The film can then be adhered with a damp cloth to most surfaces.

Kinetic Elements has invested 3+ years into evaluating, testing and trialling Suricle™ in a range of bio-fouling environments.

Static field trials (that ran for over 3 years) demonstrated that samples treated with the Suricle™ technology remained free of macro-fouler attachment for the entire duration, with only minor slime accumula. Trials have been conducted in Singapore at Raffles Marina and also in colder climates around Tasmania.

Field trials off the North West Shelf of Australia show that after 3-4 months, the control sample was heavily fouled by barnacles, while the treated samples remained clean (photo courtesy of Luca Chiaroni of Gardline).
